Sitting at Dr. Bob's GraveFor those of you in recovery Dr. Bob and Bill play a very important part in the journey.  I had the privilege in March 2017 to take a trip to Dr. Bob’s home town of Akron, Ohio.  The experience of being in the actual home that was the foundation of alcoholics anonymous is quite moving.  There is a type writer on the dining table with a letter being typed to a fellow sufferer. There is a Bible laying open on a table to the book of Matthew chapter 5…the beatitudes.   There is a book in the living room bookshelf that is titled “The Art of Selfishness” by David Seabury. If you would like to read this wonderful book please click here.  This adventure was incredible!

However, the most important “God Shot” happened in the cemetery.  You see Dr. Bob and his wife are buried in a cemetery in their home town. It is a place that most folks that take the time to go see the house go and pay their respects.  It is said to be a custom that folks will bring their coins and lay them on the gravestone.  I was walking on the well-worn grass around the grave where I could tell that many feet had trod before me.  As I was walking,  I was looking for a coin….but none were to be found.  I saw an acorn each time I circled the stone and something kept nudging me to “pick it up”.  So finally I put it in my pocket.

When I arrived back home I took the acorn out and set it on my desk. As I pondered that acorn it occurred to me to look up the meaning of an acorn.  The God Shot came at that moment.  The acorn is the seed of the mighty Oak tree and it symbolizes strength and potential. For folks that are “trudging the road of happy destiny” you will certainly understand how this acorn was a gift.  It helps me remember that I am strong and I have potential.  How many of us often forget that ?

The strongest oak of the forest is not the one that is protected from the storm

And hidden from the sun. It’s the one that stands in the open

Where it is compelled to struggle for existence against

The winds and rains and the scorching sun”   ~Napoleon Hill
